Stuff::.
On July 7th 2003, YeahsDOTcoDOTuk got the chance to interview Karen and Nick, we asked our members on the forum for the questions, we were just mere messengers between the fans and the band. So, here it is, what has to be one of the websites highlights so far. The INTERVIEW. Here is what Karen had to say::.
Sailesh:: What's the songwriting process
for you guys like? Do you usually come up with the music or the lyrics first.
Karen O:: Lately I write lyrics to a drum beat and then build from
there, when Nick and I get together to write we mostly improvise both lyrics
and music there and then, or I'll have lyrics and a simple "sketch" of a
song which Nick will inject his hot licks and hooks into making it yeahified.
S:: What can we expect from the next Yeah
Yeah Yeahs album?
KO:: We're working on a new strain of songs that we'll be touring
with for the rest of the year, that's all I can say right now. Oh and those
of you who anticipate a softer and prettier YYY sequel might be disappointed-
following the disappointment will be a fantastic sense of well being and
contentment.
S:: Do you guys prefer cheese or baked beans
on toast, or both (i.e. Chessy-Baked Beans-On Toast!!!!)?
KO::Cheese is the only kind of cheese I like
S::Who have been your favourite bands to play
with?
KO:: We've been very fortunate with the bands we get to play with,
plus we're picky. Here's my list: Liars, Foetus, Sonic Youth, Icarus Line,
JSBX, Greenhornes, Some Product, Ssion, Har Mar Superstar, and The Loves.
S:: If you were to advertise your band, what
would be three POWER words that makes your band better than everyone else's?
KO:: Female, Modern, Love
S:: If the band were an ice cream flavor,
which flavour would you guys be?
KO:: pabst blue ribbon.
S:: Collectively, which is your favourite
band or which band influenced you the most to create the Yeah Yeah Yeahs?
KO::In our conception we were influenced/instigated by
Blues Explosion and ESG equally, NYC, SEX and SASS.
S:: Does it ever scare or worry you when you
realise how many people are influenced by your style and fashion?
KO::I worry about terrorism and meteors and
degenerative diseases. I revel in how fine girls are
lookin at our shows, how inventive and punk rock DIY
they kick it. Christian and I have a chuckle every
time we see her ideas poorly ripped off in High Brow
Fashion Magazines. If anyone should be worried it
should be the boys.
S:: Does it feel more of a struggle having
a female vocalist as opposed to a male vocalist. As rock is still seen in
some peoples eyes as a male led genre.
KO:: There's no denying that being a leading lady has been an asset
for YYY's in the media, and whatever is obscured in the media I like to
straighten out in person; at a live show or maybe in an answer to a question
like this. Objectified as an over-sexed drunk slut, how can I not have a
sense of humor about that? More focus on style than substance? Believe it
or not I haven't relied on my looks all my life to get me places, in fact
knarly braces and zits nurtured the tongue in cheek sensibility that YYYs
thrive on. It fucking sucks to play shows when I have my period and I'm
not down with feeling more vulnerable around male groupies than the boys
do about their female groupies. Otherwise me and the boys share the same
stress and glory. That's about it for now.
S:: The last question…. Have you guys completed
GTA: Vice City yet?
KO::Brian has won it, Brian wins at everything he does.
